Also known as: ParisAgreementCOP21ParisAccord

The Paris Climate Agreement, adopted at COP21 in December 2015, became a global rallying cry for climate action. The accord brought 196 parties together to limit global warming to “well below 2°C” above pre-industrial levels, with ambitions to limit it to 1.5°C. The hashtag exploded when 175 countries signed on Earth Day 2016, making it the fastest international agreement to enter into force in history.

Historic Moment

The standing ovation when the gavel came down at Le Bourget marked a diplomatic victory decades in the making. Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius’s words “the Paris Agreement for the climate is accepted” reverberated globally. The hashtag surged to millions of mentions as world leaders, activists, and citizens celebrated what many called humanity’s last best chance to address climate change.

Trump Withdrawal Drama

President Trump’s June 2017 announcement that the U.S. would withdraw ignited #ParisAgreement to trend globally for days. Cities, states, and corporations pledged “We Are Still In,” creating a subnational climate movement. Ironically, Trump’s withdrawal galvanized more climate action than might have occurred otherwise. The hashtag became a resistance symbol.

Biden Rejoining

On his first day in office (January 20, 2021), President Biden signed an executive order to rejoin, with the U.S. officially back in February 2021. The hashtag trended again with relief and renewed hope. COP26 in Glasgow (2021) saw nations updating their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), though criticism mounted that pledges still fell short of 1.5°C pathways.

Implementation Reality

The hashtag’s evolution reflects the gap between ambition and action. While symbolically powerful, the Paris Agreement’s voluntary pledge-and-review system lacks enforcement mechanisms. Annual COPs became stages for #ParisAgreement discourse—celebrating incremental progress while activists demanded faster decarbonization. The agreement normalized “net zero by 2050” pledges, reshaping corporate and governmental climate commitments worldwide.
