Also known as: 314PiDayOfTheCenturyPiDay2023NationalPiDay

Annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi) held on March 14 (3/14 in month/day format), honoring the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter (approximately 3.14159). The day combines mathematics education, pie-eating, and Einstein’s birthday celebrations.

Origins

Physicist Larry Shaw organized the first Pi Day celebration in 1988 at the San Francisco Exploratorium, featuring circular marching and pie consumption. The U.S. House of Representatives officially recognized Pi Day in 2009 (H.Res. 224).

March 14 also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday (1879), adding another layer of scientific celebration to the date.

The 2015 Phenomenon

Pi Day of the Century occurred on March 14, 2015, at 9:26:53 (3/14/15 9:26:53), aligning with the first ten digits of pi (3.141592653). This won’t happen again for 100 years (March 14, 2115), making it a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Social media exploded with:

  • Exact-time photos and videos at 9:26:53 AM
  • Pie-eating contests timed to the precise moment
  • Viral posts comparing 2015’s significance to other mathematical phenomena
  • Educational content about pi’s infinite, non-repeating decimal sequence

Social Media Traditions

#PiDay trends annually with:

  • Pie puns: “I’m as sweet as pi,” “Life of Pi,” “Easy as pi”
  • Pie photos: Homemade creations, bakery purchases, pizza pies (counts!)
  • Math humor: Nerdy jokes, geometry memes, calculator tricks
  • Educational content: Pi’s history, memorization challenges, practical applications
  • Circle imagery: Spirals, circular designs, infinite loops
  • Einstein tributes: Birthday celebrations for the iconic physicist
  • Recitation challenges: People sharing how many digits of pi they’ve memorized

World Record

Rajveer Meena (India) holds the Guinness World Record for reciting 70,000 digits of pi from memory (March 21, 2015, took 10 hours).

Academic Celebrations

Schools and universities often organize:

  • Pi recitation competitions
  • Pie-baking contests
  • Math scavenger hunts
  • Pi-themed word problems
  • Circular art projects
  • “Pi-ku” poems (3 words, 1 word, 4 words pattern)

Commercial Tie-Ins

Restaurants and brands offer Pi Day promotions:

  • Pizza chains: Discounts on round pizzas (Domino’s, Pizza Hut, Blaze)
  • Bakeries: $3.14 pie slices, buy-one-get-one deals
  • 7-Eleven: Whole pizza for $3.14 (2018-2023 promotion)
  • Retail: 31.4% discounts on circular items

Opposition: Tau Day

Some mathematicians advocate for Tau Day (June 28, or 6/28) instead, arguing that tau (τ = 2π ≈ 6.28) is a more natural circle constant. Michael Hartl’s 2010 “Tau Manifesto” sparked the movement, but Pi Day remains far more popular culturally.
