Range anxiety—the fear of running out of battery charge before reaching a destination or charger—became the defining psychological barrier to EV adoption throughout the 2010s. The term emerged with early EVs like the 2010 Nissan Leaf (73-mile range) and captured the visceral dread of being stranded, even as ranges improved to 250-400+ miles by 2020.

Early EV Realities (2010-2016)

First-generation EVs justified the fear: 60-100 mile ranges meant constant charging calculations, especially in cold weather (which cut range 30-40%). Owners documented “turtle mode” warnings, tow truck calls, and the indignity of charging at RV parks. Range anxiety dominated EV skeptic arguments: “What if I need to drive 300 miles unexpectedly?”—even though most drivers average 30-40 miles daily.

Infrastructure vs Psychology

Tesla’s Supercharger network (2012+) and 200+ mile Model S range addressed practical concerns, yet anxiety persisted as a cultural meme. Gas car drivers cited range anxiety to justify avoiding EVs, despite never questioning gas range on road trips. The phenomenon exposed how unfamiliarity breeds irrational fear—“range anxiety” rarely afflicted actual EV owners, who adapted trip planning quickly.

Decline & Persistence (2018-2023)

By 2020, average EV range exceeded 250 miles, matching most gas cars’ practical range (15-gallon tank × 25 mpg = 375 miles). Anxiety shifted from “can I make it home” to “where’s the next fast charger,” a logistics problem rather than existential dread. Yet the term survived in anti-EV discourse, morphing into “charging anxiety” about wait times, broken chargers, and app frustrations—real pain points that proved range itself was never the only issue.

Range anxiety exposed how habit shapes perception: gas refueling felt “normal” despite being inconvenient and smelly, while home charging (waking to a “full tank” daily) felt risky despite being more convenient. The term became shorthand for EV adoption resistance rooted more in unfamiliarity than rational calculation.
