#RegenerativeAgriculture promoted farming practices that restore soil health, sequester carbon, increase biodiversity, and reverse environmental damage caused by industrial agriculture.

Core Principles

Regenerative agriculture emphasizes: no-till farming (preserving soil structure), cover cropping (protecting soil year-round), crop rotation diversity, integrating livestock (holistic grazing), eliminating synthetic pesticides/fertilizers, and building organic matter. Unlike “sustainable agriculture” (maintaining status quo), regenerative practices aim to actively heal degraded land.

Carbon Sequestration Claims

Advocates argued healthy soils could sequester atmospheric carbon, potentially offsetting agriculture’s 10-12% of global emissions. Documentary “Kiss the Ground” (2020) featured by Woody Harrelson popularized claims that regenerative agriculture could reverse climate change. Scientists debated carbon sequestration potential, with some warning against overstated claims distracting from emissions reduction.

Corporate Adoption

General Mills, Nestlé, Danone, and Patagonia Provisions invested in regenerative supply chains. Critics questioned whether corporate adoption would deliver meaningful change or become greenwashing—co-opting language while maintaining extractive practices. Certification schemes emerged but lacked standardization.

Indigenous Knowledge

Regenerative agriculture often echoed traditional Indigenous farming practices dismissed by colonial industrial agriculture: intercropping (Three Sisters: corn, beans, squash), rotational systems, and viewing land as living ecosystem rather than resource to exploit. The movement faced criticism for insufficiently crediting Indigenous origins.

Systemic Barriers

Transitioning from industrial to regenerative farming required upfront investment, knowledge, and time for soil recovery—challenging for debt-burdened farmers operating on thin margins. Movement advocates pushed for policy supporting transition: subsidies, crop insurance reform, research funding, and ending industrial agriculture subsidies.
