The pandemic-forced shift to virtual internships that democratized access while reducing hands-on learning and coffee runs.

COVID-19 Necessity

Pre-pandemic, remote internships were rare except for tech startups. COVID-19 (March 2020) forced all summer 2020 internships virtual or canceled. Companies scrambled to create remote intern experiences. Interns worked from bedrooms, attending Zoom meetings and completing projects digitally. The awkwardness was palpable.

Unexpected Benefits

Remote internships eliminated geographic barriers—students in rural areas could intern at NYC companies. Housing costs disappeared. Companies could hire more interns without office space constraints. Some students thrived without commute stress and office politics. But networking—internships’ hidden value—suffered via Zoom.

Hybrid Future

By 2022-2023, most internships returned to in-person or hybrid. But remote remained viable for certain roles (software, marketing, data analysis). The pandemic proved remote work extended to internships, though hands-on industries (engineering, biotech, hospitality) required physical presence. The future was flexible rather than fully remote.
