The Saudi-backed LIV Golf league that fractured professional golf with massive paydays, “sportswashing” accusations, and PGA Tour defections.

The Saudi Gambit

In October 2021, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced LIV Golf—a rival league to the PGA Tour. LIV offered guaranteed money ($100-200M for top players), shorter tournaments (54 holes), and team format. The goal: disrupt golf and improve Saudi Arabia’s global image. Critics called it “sportswashing”—using sports to clean the regime’s reputation (Khashoggi murder, human rights abuses).

Defections and Backlash

Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and other stars joined LIV for enormous paychecks. The PGA Tour suspended them and refused to recognize LIV events. Golf fans divided sharply—was this player freedom and needed competition, or blood money destroying golf’s integrity? 9/11 families protested, noting Saudi involvement in the attacks.

Shocking PGA-LIV Merger

In June 2023, the PGA Tour and LIV Golf announced a shocking merger—after two years of bitter warfare. The announcement blindsided players, fans, and the public. Critics accused the PGA Tour of hypocrisy after condemning Saudi money. By late 2023, the merger’s details remained murky, but LIV had permanently changed golf’s economics and ethics debates.
