Origin & Impact

#ShePersisted erupted when Senate Majority Leader McConnell invoked an obscure rule to silence Elizabeth Warren during Jeff Sessions’ confirmation hearing. She was reading Coretta Scott King’s letter opposing Sessions. McConnell explained: “She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”

“Nevertheless, she persisted” instantly became a feminist mantra. Women shared stories of persisting despite opposition. The hashtag celebrated women who refused to be silenced, overlooked, or deterred. It became tattoo fodder and merchandise.

The phrase joined #NastyWoman as resistance-era feminist language—taking male attempts to diminish women and transforming them into empowerment. It represented refusal to accept second-class status.
