Overview

#ShoutYourAbortion (SYA) is a movement challenging abortion stigma by encouraging people to share their abortion stories publicly, without shame or apology. Founded in September 2015, SYA rejects the narrative that abortion must be rare, difficult, or regretful—asserting instead that abortion is common, often positive, and deserving of destigmatization.

Origins

On September 19, 2015, Seattle writer Amelia Bonow posted on Facebook about her abortion after Congress threatened to defund Planned Parenthood. Her friend Lindy West tweeted, “Shout your abortion” in solidarity.

Within hours, thousands shared abortion stories under #ShoutYourAbortion, many for the first time. The hashtag offered an alternative to anti-choice “abortion regret” narratives and even pro-choice messaging that framed abortion as tragic-but-necessary.

Core Philosophy

SYA’s approach:

  • No shame, no apology: Abortion as a normal healthcare decision
  • Diverse stories: Happy abortions, sad abortions, complicated feelings—all valid
  • Reject stigma: Challenge the idea that abortion requires justification (rape, incest, health)
  • Systemic critique: Connect reproductive justice to economic, racial, and gender justice

The movement argues that centering the most marginalized (poor people, people of color, trans people) reveals how abortion access is inseparable from broader liberation.

Key Campaigns and Projects

Book (2018):
Shout Your Abortion collected essays, photos, and creative work celebrating abortion access.

Art and Culture:
SYA produced zines, clothing, and public art normalizing abortion. The iconic “ABORTION” sweatshirts became symbols of unapologetic abortion rights.

Storytelling:
SYA platforms centered first-person narratives—countering anti-choice propaganda with real experiences of relief, autonomy, and gratitude.

Video Series (2020):
Short films featuring abortion stories, providers, and activists.

Roe v. Wade Overturn (2022)

When Dobbs v. Jackson (June 24, 2022) overturned Roe, #ShoutYourAbortion surged:

  • Millions shared abortion stories to humanize the crisis
  • SYA emphasized that abortion bans disproportionately harm Black, Indigenous, poor, and disabled people
  • The movement mobilized around mutual aid, abortion funds, and direct action

Post-Roe, SYA’s destigmatization work became even more urgent as people faced criminalization for seeking or providing abortions.

Criticism and Controversy

From anti-choice movement:
Accusations of “celebrating baby murder” (SYA counters that abortion is healthcare, fetuses are not babies)

From some pro-choice advocates:
Concern that “shouting” alienates persuadable voters who prefer “safe, legal, rare” messaging

SYA response:
Stigma enables restrictions; normalizing abortion is strategically necessary. People shouldn’t have to perform trauma to deserve healthcare.

Impact

SYA helped:

  • Mainstream abortion storytelling (paving way for shows like “Shrill,” books, memoirs)
  • Empower individuals to share without shame
  • Shift cultural conversation from “necessary evil” to “healthcare and autonomy”
  • Influence younger generation’s unapologetic abortion rights advocacy
