Instagram and travel social media (2012-2023) romanticize souks as authentic cultural experiences: Marrakech’s souks, Cairo’s Khan el-Khalili, Aleppo’s covered souks (pre-war), Jerusalem’s Old City markets, Dubai’s Deira souks.
The souk hashtag generates millions of travel photography posts: spice pyramids in vibrant colors, hanging lanterns, textile stalls, gold jewelry displays, narrow alleyways with light streaming through. The aesthetic appeals to Orientalist fascinations—exotic, colorful, chaotic, pre-modern—creating tension between cultural appreciation and exoticizing tourism gaze.
For Arab social media users, souks represent contested heritage: nostalgia for traditional commerce versus recognition of tourist commodification, pride in cultural preservation versus frustration with developmental neglect, local shopping spaces versus tourist attractions that price out residents. The debates reflect broader tensions about modernity, globalization, and cultural authenticity.
