Overview
Sport climbing made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 (held in 2021 due to COVID). The IOC’s decision in August 2016 marked climbing’s transition from niche sport to mainstream athletic competition, though the format drew controversy from the climbing community.
The Combined Format Controversy
The Tokyo 2020 format combined three disciplines (speed climbing, bouldering, lead climbing) into a single medal event. Critics argued speed climbing is a completely different sport—like combining marathon running with sprinting—disadvantaging well-rounded competitors.
Medal Winners
Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret won women’s gold, while Spain’s Alberto Ginés López won men’s gold. American Nathaniel Coleman took men’s silver. The event drew 3.2 million viewers on NBC, making it one of the most-watched Olympic climbing events in history.
Paris 2024 Changes
The IOC split speed climbing into a separate event for Paris 2024, addressing the combined format backlash. Boulder-and-lead remained combined as one discipline.
