Cloud Gaming Failure
Google Stadia (launched November 2019, shut down January 2023) was Google’s cloud gaming platform promising AAA games streamed to any device. The service’s failure after massive investment symbolized tech giants’ inability to understand gaming industry/culture.
Launch promise: “Gaming without console”; play anywhere; no downloads
Problems from start:
- Input lag (even with good internet)
- Limited game library
- $60 games + $10/month subscription
- Refund all game purchases before shutdown (good) but proves unreliability
Developer abandonment: Google shut down internal studios (February 2021) killing exclusive games strategy
September 29, 2022: Shutdown announced; January 18, 2023 service ended
Refunds: Google refunded all hardware/software purchases (~$20M+)
Lessons:
- Cloud gaming not ready for primetime
- Google kills products quickly (erodes trust)
- Gaming needs commitment Google couldn’t provide
- Ownership > streaming for games
Stadia joins Google Graveyard alongside Google+, Inbox, Reader - proving Google can’t stick with anything.
