TBR (To Be Read) Pile
TBR (To Be Read) piles are readers’ ever-growing backlogs of unread books—physical stacks, ebook libraries, or Goodreads lists. The phenomenon became identity marker and source of humorous anxiety (2012-2023).
Cultural Phenomenon
Readers proudly post TBR shelf photos showcasing 50, 100, 500+ unread books—evidence of literary ambition and shopping addiction. “Mount TBR” jokes acknowledge impossibility of reading them all. Book hauls add dozens monthly while TBR remains un-dented.
Tsundoku
The Japanese term “tsundoku” (buying books without reading them) perfectly captured TBR culture. Readers rationalized purchases: “It was on sale,” “I’ll read it eventually,” “Building my library.” E-readers enabled infinite accumulation—Kindle libraries with 1,000+ unread books.
TBR Guilt
Many readers felt guilty about unread books, treating TBRs as obligations. Book communities countered: books are meant to provide joy, not stress. “Unhaul” movements encouraged donating/selling unread books to reduce guilt. Others embraced TBR chaos—options bring happiness, even unread.
