TileTracker

Twitter 2013-09 technology peaked
Also known as: TileTileMate

#TileTracker chronicled the Bluetooth tracker pioneer (2013 Kickstarter, $2.6M raised) dominating category for years, then facing existential threat when Apple launched AirTags (2021) with billion-device Find My network. The hashtag tracked Tile’s clever marketing, community finding feature, antitrust complaints against Apple, and struggle for survival.

Bluetooth Tracker Pioneer

Tile Kickstarter (July 2013) proved demand for key/wallet finders. #TileTracker captured simple value prop: attach $25 tile to items, use app to ring them, see last location, and tap into Tile’s user network for crowdsourced finding. The replaceable battery model (later rechargeable) and multi-device support built loyal customer base.

The Apple Threat

April 2021: AirTags launched at $29 with Apple’s Find My network (1 billion+ devices). #TileTracker documented existential crisis—Tile’s 30M user network couldn’t compete with Apple’s scale, precision finding used UWB Tile lacked, and seamless iOS integration Tile couldn’t match. Tile testified before Congress about Apple’s anticompetitive practices, but market dynamics were clear.

Fighting for Relevance

Tile added features (SOS button, AR finding), partnered with Google, and competed on price. #TileTracker tracked survival strategy: Android users (half the market), multi-platform support, and enterprise deals. But AirTags fundamentally changed category—from niche accessory to mass market Apple ecosystem feature. Tile survived as alternative, not leader it once was.
