Wattpad
Wattpad launched 2006 as a free serialized fiction platform where amateur writers share stories chapter-by-chapter. By 2020, it hosted 90M+ users and became a Hollywood IP farm, with “After” (Anna Todd) and “The Kissing Booth” (Beth Reekles) becoming massive franchises.
Platform Culture
Wattpad skewed young (70% under 25), female (80%+), and favored fanfiction-adjacent genres: bad boy romance, werewolf mates, mafia bosses, billionaire CEOs, and Y/A dystopian. Stories accumulated millions of reads, with top authors (Anna Todd’s “After”: 1.5 billion+ reads) gaining celebrity status.
Publishing Pipeline
Traditional publishers mined Wattpad for hits, offering book deals to viral authors. Wattpad Studios (2016) formalized partnerships with TV/film producers. Critics argued Wattpad’s unedited, often poorly written stories lowered literary standards, but commercial success was undeniable.
2021 Acquisition
South Korean internet company Naver acquired Wattpad for $600M+ (2021), integrating it with Webtoon. Wattpad Paid Stories (2019) let authors monetize, though most writers earned nothing.
