Origin & Impact

After NFL player Ray Rice was caught on video assaulting his then-fiancée, many victim-blamed her for staying with him. In response, domestic violence survivors created #WhyIStayed and #WhyILeft to share their complex reasons for remaining in or leaving abusive relationships. The hashtags trended worldwide, with thousands of personal stories.

The campaign powerfully countered victim-blaming narratives and educated the public about the psychological, financial, and social factors that trap people in abusive situations. It became a valuable resource for advocates and remains used during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
