Overview

Wingfoiling (or wing surfing) combines a handheld inflatable wing with a hydrofoil board, allowing riders to glide above water using wind power. The sport emerged in 2019 as a mashup of kitesurfing, windsurfing, and foiling, quickly becoming the fastest-growing watersport.

The Perfect Storm of Convergence

Wingfoiling emerged when several technologies matured: inflatable wings (portable, durable), hydrofoil boards (efficient lift at low speeds), and lightweight carbon construction. Brands like Duotone, Slingshot, and Naish released wing products in 2019.

The Accessibility Factor

Unlike kitesurfing (complex rigging, dangerous kites) and windsurfing (heavy gear, difficult upwind progress), wingfoiling has a gentler learning curve. Riders can learn basics in 4-8 hours vs. 10-20 hours for kitesurfing.

Explosive Growth

Participation surged 300%+ from 2019-2021. Hood River, Oregon, and Tarifa, Spain, became wingfoiling meccas. By 2022, wing sales rivaled kite and windsurf equipment sales at major retailers.
