Origin & Impact

#WomensMarch mobilized millions the day after Trump’s inauguration. The massive, peaceful protests dwarfed inauguration crowds—a sore point for Trump. Pink “pussy hats” (referencing the Access Hollywood tape) became iconic symbols.

The hashtag coordinated logistics for hundreds of cities, shared photos of packed streets, and launched the “resistance” movement. Women marched for reproductive rights, equality, climate action, and against Trump’s rhetoric. The energy carried into 2018 midterms.

Annual marches continued but faced internal conflicts over leadership and inclusivity. Still, the 2017 march remains the largest single-day protest in American history and galvanized progressive activism for years.
