The Xbox One’s Disastrous Reveal

In May 2013, Microsoft held a press conference to reveal the Xbox One, their next-generation console. What should have been a triumphant moment became one of gaming’s most infamous disasters, defined by always-online requirements, used game restrictions, and tone-deaf executive responses.

The Three Fatal Mistakes

The reveal focused heavily on TV integration and entertainment features while barely mentioning games. More damaging were three requirements: the console needed to connect online every 24 hours or it would stop working, the Kinect camera was mandatory and always-on, and physical game discs would be tied to Xbox Live accounts, effectively killing the used game market.

When asked about military personnel or people in rural areas without reliable internet, Xbox executive Don Mattrick delivered the line that would define the disaster: “We have a product for people who can’t get online—it’s called Xbox 360.” The comment showcased stunning arrogance and disconnection from consumers.

Sony’s Mic Drop Moment

At E3 2013 weeks later, Sony delivered a masterclass in competitive marketing. PlayStation’s Jack Tretton announced the PS4 would be $399 (vs Xbox One’s $499), would not require internet connection, and would support used games. A video showing two PlayStation executives passing a game disc back and forth—titled “Official PlayStation Used Game Instructional Video”—went viral with 20+ million views.

The Complete Reversal

Facing pre-order cancellation waves and universal mockery, Microsoft reversed course in June 2013, removing the always-online requirement and used game restrictions. Don Mattrick left Microsoft a month later to become CEO of Zynga. The Xbox One still launched with mandatory Kinect at $499, contributing to the PS4 outselling it more than 2-to-1 throughout the generation.
