Also known as: MemriseLanguageLearningMemsForLanguage

The spaced repetition language app using mnemonic “mems” that competed with Duolingo before falling behind in the gamification arms race.

Mnemonic Learning

Memrise launched September 2010 by Ed Cooke (memory champion) and Greg Detre (neuroscientist), using spaced repetition and mnemonics (“mems”). Users learned vocabulary through memory tricks—visual associations, silly phrases, cultural context. The approach was more scientifically grounded than Duolingo’s gamification.

Community Content

Memrise’s strength was user-generated courses covering 200+ languages plus subjects like history and trivia. Anyone could create courses. Advanced learners made comprehensive Japanese Anki-style decks. But quality varied wildly—official courses were better, but community courses lacked consistency.

Duolingo’s Shadow

By 2018, Duolingo’s superior gamification, streak mechanics, and marketing dominated language learning. Memrise added games and streaks but felt derivative. The app shifted toward subscription revenue ($60/year) and native speaker videos. By 2023, Memrise had 70+ million users but was distant second to Duolingo’s 500+ million.
