#SuperBowlBlackout documented the bizarre 34-minute power outage during Super Bowl XLVII (February 3, 2013) that halted Ravens-49ers game, spawned conspiracy theories, and became one of sports’ strangest moments. The hashtag tracked real-time confusion, Oreo’s legendary “dunk in the dark” tweet, and the 49ers’ comeback attempt following delay.

The Blackout

Third quarter, Ravens leading 28-6 after Jacoby Jones’ 108-yard kickoff return TD. Suddenly, half of Superdome’s lights went out. #SuperBowlBlackout captured 34 minutes of chaos—players stretching on field, announcers killing time, officials bewildered, and Twitter exploding with jokes. Cause: electrical relay device failure, later blamed on Superdome infrastructure.

The Oreo Tweet

Oreo’s social team posted “Power out? No problem. You can still dunk in the dark” with simple graphic. #SuperBowlBlackout made this the most famous Super Bowl ad that wasn’t an ad—real-time marketing perfection, replicated but never matched. The tweet earned more publicity than million-dollar commercial spots, changing advertising industry’s approach to live events.

Game Impact

After delay, 49ers rallied from 28-6 to 31-29, falling short. #SuperBowlBlackout sparked theories: Did NFL extend game for drama? Did 49ers benefit from cool-down period? Ravens coach John Harbaugh faced brother Jim—did someone help John? No evidence supported conspiracies, but the blackout’s perfect timing (blowout becoming competitive) fueled speculation. Ravens won 34-31, but blackout overshadowed Flacco’s MVP performance.
