The Philosophy
PLUR (Peace, Love, Unity, Respect) is the foundational ethos of rave culture, emphasizing radical acceptance, emotional vulnerability, and collective transcendence through dance music. Originated in early 1990s rave scene, it experienced mainstream resurgence during EDM explosion 2010-2016.
Origins
PLUR attributed to DJ Frankie Bones (1990s Brooklyn underground scene), who stopped a party to remind attendees: “If you don’t start showing some peace, love, and unity, and respect to each other, this thing will be over.” The acronym became rave culture’s moral code.
Kandi Trading Ritual
PLUR handshake became ceremonial kandi bracelet exchange:
- Peace: Cross hands, interlock fingers
- Love: Form heart shape with hands
- Unity: Clasp hands together
- Respect: Slide bracelet from giver’s wrist to receiver’s
The ritual transformed simple bead trading into spiritual connection between strangers.
Cultural Impact
PLUR created safe spaces for LGBTQ+ communities, neurodivergent individuals, and social outcasts. The emphasis on consent culture, harm reduction (DanceSafe), and emotional support networks made raves uniquely inclusive environments.
Commercialization Tension
As EDM went mainstream (2012-2015), PLUR faced commercialization: Kandi sold on Etsy, “PLUR Life” merchandise, influencers commodifying authenticity. Purists argued corporate festivals contradicted PLUR’s anti-capitalist roots.
